Curran welcomes New Legislation on Headshops Products

Jun 4, 2010

Press Release                                                                                                4th June 2010

Curran welcomes New Legislation on Headshop Products

“The Government is moving in a deliberate way to protect the public from dangerous products sold in Headshops,” said Deputy Curran.

“Under the Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Bill Gardaí and the Courts will be given the power to intervene quickly to prevent outlets from selling substances that have psychoactive effects.”

“The Bill will make the sale or supply of substances which are not covered by Misuse of Drugs Acts, but do have psychoactive effects, for human consumption a criminal offence.”

“This is very important legislation and follows a series of work I carried out while I was Minister for Drugs.”

“I also want to see the issue of planning dealt with.  Local authorities should have the power to refuse permission for a unit to be opened as a Headshop. This must be changed and I am continuing to work on this important issue.”

“In the meantime I look forward to this new Bill becoming law and being rigorously enforced to protect the public,” concluded Minister Curran.
