Main Areas:
Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown, Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart and Brittas
Constituency Profile:
John Curran, is the sitting Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West. In May 2007 he topped the poll for a second time running when he got 23% (8650 votes)of the number one votes. In the 2002 General Election John topped the poll having received 21% (5904 votes) of the first preference votes.
The constituency of Dublin Mid-West now comprises the area west of the M50 motorway between the Naas Road and the River Liffey as well as Saggart and Rathcoole and Brittas. For the next general election it will also include Quarryvale and Palmerstown.
The constituency consists of a mix of long established urban areas like old Clondalkin and Lucan Villages as well as rapidly growing parts like Lucan south. This is a combined with the more rural surroundings of Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart and Brittas to the south which, as of yet, have been spared the excesses of the ever expanding Greater Dublin area.
Recent boundary revisions have resulted in the Palmerstown and Quarryvale areas joining the rest of the Lucan electoral area in this constituency. Accordingly the constituency will gain a fourth seat at the next general election.
